"The discipline which studies the ways in which persons are placed into and removed from age grades between birth through age 18. It deals with differences in socialization of boys and girls, patterns of authority and resistance to authority of parents; the character of the parenting process as well as who and how many are involved in parenting. Generally, individuals are accepted into a family or tribe or society when they go through a rite of passage in which they are given both name and status in a social base as a legal child in a family. If not, the infant is a non-person and may be killed, made ward of a court or adopted out to another parent. After passage into a social base, the young person is put through a rather long socialization process at the end of which, usually, s/he goes through another rite of passage and is accorded full adult status. See Age grades for more; see Majority for the displacement of rites of passage by law."
